Welcome to the Lehigh Valley Writers Academy Home Page Founded in 2002, The Lehigh Valley Writers Academy (LVWA) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization which shapes the regional literary landscape by offering educational events and public forums for writers. The LVWA discovers and guides aspiring new voices in fiction, nonfiction, journalism, poetry, plays and screenwriting. LVWA offers in- depth experiences to its participants that encourage them to further their appreciation of literature, as well as their writing skills. Through our programs, our organization assists local writers of all ages and levels of proficiency in pursuing literary learning and creative development. Our programs reach out to the Lehigh Valley's diverse communities. Since our inception in April 2002, we have been facilitating approximately 100 classes (involving over 1,000 people), workshops and cultural art events annually and have collaborated with the Allentown school district, Allentown Art Museum, Allentown Symphony, Leonardo da Vinci’s Horse, Inc, Civic Theatre, the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild, the Trexler Trust, and Mayfair. Additionally, in 2004, we published a 40-page poetry chapbook titled May Words to coincide with the Mayfair events. Currently, we publish two journals, the Lehigh Valley Literary Review (LVLR) is a semi-annual publication and the Lehigh Valley Literary Review-Youth Edition (LVLR-YE) is an annual publication. Currently, we are not offering any workshops. Occasionally, we have a guest speaker Lecture Series that has included editors from the local newspapers and regional magazines, published book authors and national magazine writers. Some other workshops that were offered have been: the Youth Writing Salon (designed for children in middle school), Japanese influence in Literature, Short Story Writing, Literary Agents Workshop and Scriptwriting Essentials. The persons benefited by the organization are mostly adult except when we offer our Youth Writing Salon. Additionally, we have received grants from the PA Council on the Arts, Lehigh Valley Arts Council, Charles H. Hoch Foundation, Charles A. & Leona K. Gruber Foundation, Leona K. Gruber Charitable Trust, The Century Fund and from private individuals. |
